What vehicles are eligible for the incentive?

MileageSmart aims to get more efficient cars on the road in Vermont.  To qualify, the car needs to meet the following guidelines:

  • Vehicle must be purchased at a Vermont Dealership

  • Vehicle must have a sale price of less than $40,000

  • If you are taking out a loan, the interest rate on the loan must not exceed 12%

*Incentives are limited to one per individual over the life of the program. Participant must obtain ownership of the vehicle for a minimum of 12 months (1 year) from the time the vehicle was sold.

There are currently over 70 models eligible.  Some are gas-electric hybrids, like the Toyota Prius.  Some are electric with gas backups - they plug-in and gas-up - like the Chevy Volt.  And, some are all-electric, like the Nissan Leaf.

Why are High MPGs important?

High miles-per-gallon means you can drive further on every tank of gas, and fill up far less often.  That’s savings to you.  If you buy a fully electric vehicle, you can bank on even more long-term savings - for example, did you know electric cars don’t need oil changes?!

A high MPG car is also good for the planet. Transportation accounts for the majority of Vermont’s climate change pollution. High MPG cars mean less pollution every time you drive, which helps create a cleaner, safer, more habitable planet now and for future generations.

Emissions Warranties

Depending on the model year and mileage of your new-to-you vehicle, the cost of emissions system repairs may be covered by the vehicle manufacturer. Knowing about your vehicle’s warranty could save you significant money, and can also help protect Vermont’s air quality! Check out the resources below to learn if a car you’re thinking of buying is covered under an Emissions Warranty.
